Modern approaches to the treatment of spasticity: which muscle relaxant to choose?

Muscle relaxants are a heterogeneous group of drugs with different chemical structures, which are united by the ability to reduce the tone of skeletal muscles. They are used to treat spasticity in diseases and injuries of the central nervous system, as well as in myofascial pain syndromes, for example, in lumbago. Among the variety of molecules and trade names, it is sometimes difficult to decide on a choice. Ideally, the drug should act quickly, have a pathogenetic effect, facilitate or at least not complicate rehabilitation, not have a sedative effect and not suppress hemodynamics. But due to the direct effect on the structures of the central nervous system, no molecule of this class does without side effects.

Thiocolchicoside (Muscomed) is a classic and well-studied muscle relaxant, which, thanks to a dual mechanism of action, affects spasticity of both central and peripheral origin in various neurological diseases and injuries. The rationality of choosing thiocolchicoside is based on the absence of a sedative effect and the interaction of the drugs through the enzymes of the cytochrome system. The three dosage forms of Muskomed (solution for injections, capsules and cream) allow you to individually choose therapy for each patient, taking into account his needs and the place of treatment.
