The place of ceftriaxone and cefepime in perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis and the fight against nosocomial infections

Author: Tatyana Chystyk

Abstract

Experimental and clinical data obtained as a result of multicenter randomized trials convincingly prove that the rational perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in surgical practice reduces the incidence of postoperative complications from 20–40 to 5–1.5 %. This review considers the use of cephalosporins of the third (ceftriaxone) and the fourth (cefepime) generations for perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis, the appropriateness of which is reflected in international recommendations.

Keywords: perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis; ceftriaxone; cefepime; nosocomial infections
