Eye diseases: age-related macular dystrophy

Age-related macular dystrophy (AMD) is a dangerous eye pathology

AMD is one of the most dangerous eye diseases. Age-related — that is, related to age, aging of the body. It threatens complete and irreversible loss of central vision.

The acuity of our vision depends on the condition of a small area in the center of the retina – the macula. The fovea of the macula is only 1.5 mm in diameter, and it is this part of the macula that makes it possible to see fine details clearly when reading, writing, sewing, etc., and distinguish colors.

The macula is also called a yellow spot for the characteristic shade given to it by the pigments lutein and zeaxanthin. They help protect the eye from ultraviolet radiation and the harmful effects of the blue light spectrum.
